Traffic Tickets

If you received a traffic ticket issued by an Amherst Police Officer or a New York State Trooper, please follow the instructions below:

• Misdemeanor Offenses:
  You must appear in court on the date stated on your ticket.
• Violation Offenses:
  You must enter a plea on the back of the ticket and return it to the court by mail or in person by the date listed.

How to Plead

• Part A – Guilty:
  A guilty plea will result in a fine and license points if applicable.
• Part B – Not Guilty:
  A not guilty plea will result in an assigned court date.

Important: Include your current telephone number, complete mailing address, and zip code with your submission.

Inspection Violations

If your vehicle inspection was expired:

• You must have your vehicle inspected within 48 hours to have the court fine waived.
• Submit proof of inspection with your ticket.
• Complete Part A on the front of the ticket and return it to the court by the date listed.

Equipment Violations

If your vehicle inspection was expired:

The court may dismiss equipment violation tickets (Vehicle & Traffic Law §§ 375, 376, or 381) if:

• You provide proof the defect was corrected
• The repair occurred before ½ hour after sunset on the first full business day after the ticket was issued.

Cases are assigned to judges based on the date of offense.
